The Town of Shorter recently received a Congressional appropriation for funding through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to redevelop the recreational grounds at the Old Shorter School. The appropriation of $100,000 will be used in conjunction with Town of Shorter funds to develop a football field and softball field with a two-story concession stand//restroom building.
Mayor Powell said, "This is a great day for the people of Shorter and Macon County. We owe a great deal of gratitude to our Congressman Mike Rogers and the rest of our Congressional delegation for their hardwork and dedication to seeing this effort through."
The Old Shorter School is famous for being at the heart of movement to desegregate schools in the 1960s. In fact, the Old Shorter School is the place where former Alabama Governor George Wallace took is first stand in front of the schoolhouse doors to prevent blacks from accessing the same educational system of whites at that time. The work taking place at the Old Shorter School is a testament of the progress towards racial unity and social progress in America.
