New Shorter Sewer System Pumping Away!

January 05, 2006

The Town of Shorter has something else to be excited about.  The approximately $1.5 million dollar project was started earlier this year and is finally up and running.  The system has a maximum sustained capacity to treat up to 60,000 gallons per day of raw sewage.

The new system is fully paid for with grants and local funding for land acquisition, engineering, and construction.  Mayor Willie Mae Powell said, “This is a great day for our Town.  We have been working for years to develop a sewage system to support new business and industry, and today we finally have it.”  The system currently has only one customer (Halla Climate Systems-Alabama), and has an abundance of capacity to handle large commercial/residential developments, and new industrial activity in the Town.

The Town of Shorter is now aggressively seeking new businesses to hook up to the system, in order to create some new jobs, and take up some of the excess capacity in the system.  Councilman Desiev Howard said, “The Town Government has worked continuously and cooperatively to complete this very worthy project.  We want to attract more jobs, quality restaurants, and shops to the Town to help grow our Town and Macon County.  The Town Council and I will continue to work cooperatively with Mayor Powell and Town Staff to make sure that Shorter is positioned to take advantage of future growth and development.”

The sewer project is just one completed item on a long list of planned developments and activities in and around the Town of Shorter. There has been a lot of speculation about interest on the part of some businessmen to establish at least two new Bingo Entertainment centers in the Town. These facilities, if constructed, would create thousands of new jobs, and bring competition to Macon County for entertainment. The increased competition alone will mean better wages and benefits for those employed at either facility. The improvements in wages and benefits will ultimately lead to an improvement in the overall quality of life for all of Macon County
