Jimmy Lee Ellis was born on July 9, 1959 in Tuskegee, Alabama.
His parents were the late Mr. Henry and Inez Ellis.
He is married to Mrs. Henrietta Ellis and has two children Mrs. Lakisha Floyd and Jimmy K. Ellis.
Jimmy has four brothers and one sister.
He attended Prairie Farms, Shorter Elementary and graduated at Deborah Cannon Wolfe High School in 1978.
After school he attended the Cabinet Making Class at Trenholm State Technical College.
In 1984 he completed his certification at Auburn University to become a Vocational Instructor.
He attended Troy State University in Montgomery in 1999.
He also worked in the construction arena framing houses for several years.
In 1979 Jimmy enlisted in the United States Navy under the delayed entry program.
January 1980 he attended basic training at the Great Lakes Training facility in Great Lakes Illinois.
After basic training he attended several schools and graduated as an Electrician Mate.
Jimmy was assigned to the USS Raleigh LPD 1. Some of his duties were repairing and troubleshooting
switch boards, lighting distribution systems, electrical controllers, elevators, fork lifts,
electrical motors, generators, and a number of other electrical related assignments.
Jimmy also spent a great deal of time training to be a ship board firefighter.
Jimmy was discharged from the active Navy in January 1983 with an honorable discharge.
He quickly enlisted in the Navy Reserve and was stationed at the Naval Reserve Center in Montgomery,
Alabama. In February of that same year he was employed by the Montgomery Area Skill Center as a
Building Maintenance Instructor. September of 1983 he was employed by the Alabama Department of
Youth Services as a Vocational Instructor to teach Carpentry. As of this date Jimmy has been
employed by the Department of Youth Services for over twenty two years.
Jimmy joined the Shorter Volunteer Fire Department in 1998 as a firefighter.
He was promoted to Fire Chief in 2000 and is currently in that position.
He successfully completed Fire Fighter One, First Responder, and Fire Fighter II at the
Alabama Fire College. Jimmy loves working with the public as well as other public safety officials.
His goal is to work full time for the Town of Shorter upon retiring from the Department of
Youth Services within a few years.
